This was a much less eventful journey than our route to Flores as we opted to buy a through ticket to Lombok, ruling out any further need to barter, and any further stress, along the way.

We arrived in Gili Trawangan after around 27 hours travelling, the last part of the journey being on a small public boat to the island. This was piled high with people, suitcases, food bags and baskets, and goodness knows what else!

Our first night was a Wednesday, supposedly one of the more popular nights to party on the island, so we thought it rude not to go and see what all the fuss was about. Before the partying began we went to find food, and came across a great night market with several different buffet stalls to choose from. I was able to try some delightful vegetarian dishes I had not previously tasted, though sadly I could not name any of them now…

Then our night really began. We started in a Reggae bar, watching a live band for an hour or so, then wandered further up the street, following the crowd to a bar filled with dancing and beer pong. The final port of call was an Irish bar, though more of a club at this point, where we stayed until closing time. We noticed from our time here, as well as our night in Kuta, that Indonesians seem to like to party in the same area as tourists, quite in contrast to the other countries I have visited.

During the afternoon we had noted the high number of swimming pools along the main street, all part of dive clubs used for discover dives (people attempting scuba diving for the first time), and had decided we should try these out. And so that night, occurred the pool crawl. Leaving the club we walked down the main street towards our hostel, stopping to jump into each pool as quickly as possible before the guard came to chase us out!

The following day was a write off, tired from both travels and parties, we both managed to sleep until 4pm! The highlight of that day being one mean vegetarian baguette I purchased for dinner.

On our final day we went diving, and I broke my toe.. Just before I left for my morning dive I managed to walk into one of the wooden bed bases and break my second smallest toe. The dive was still fun, though getting my foot in and out of the flipper was not so much.

Planning to leave the island the next morning, we had one final party night. Although this did not end in quite as exciting a fashion, we did meet one unsuspecting man whose pool we insisted on crashing as soon as he let slip his hotel had one!

Realising we didn’t have enough time for our planned trip across Flores to Kelimutu volcano, Laura and I headed for the boat back towards Lombok, aiming for Gili Trawangan, the following morning.
